After the elections in October `18 the current Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Wilson Witzel, took office in January this year, running his campaign with the promise of a slaughter of drug dealers. In a country that has seen, according to bourgeois statistics, more then 57.000 murders last years Witzel drove the numbers of police killings to new heights, with at least 30% of all killings (about 1.075 people in the first seven months of 2019) in the state of Rio being done by the hands of the police.

That the population of Rio is facing large scale police terror by and of itself is nothing new. The police in Rio is notorious for their murders, tortures and disappearances as well as the collusion and personal union with the paramilitaries, drug runners, etc. In the 1990s and the first half of the 2000s the military police in Rio was one of the most deadly police institutions in the world. From 2008 onward, with the foundation of the Police Pacification Unit (Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora – UPP) as part of the military police, a model of de-facto military occupation of the favelas and poor neighborhoods was adopted.

Now, with Witzel in charge, police doctrine has yet again been shifting: While police murders and torture were hushed up or denied before and people simply disappeared to never turn up again, now the police executions and murders are conducted openly and publicly defended. The backing of the government for those police murders, with or without legal backing, go so far, that the governor himself made a video of flying in a helicopter over a favela while the police was shooting at the inhabitants. Hence, there is little wonder about him recently receiving the rank of general within the military police.

In a few months, there have been episodes of unprecedented barbarity, examples such as the helicopter shooting mentioned prior, the massacres against surrendering people by the hands of police officers or as the week in August - when in only two days police bullets took away the live of six innocent people – the shooting of a boy (afterwards declared to be a drug dealer) or the murder of 8 year old Agatha Félix that sparked massive outcry. Only today another 5 year old child was killed during a police opperation, making it the the 6th child killed due to police operations in Rio this year. Against this terror exerted particularly against the population of the poorest neighborhoods in Rio many protests have developed and guided by the slogan of the comrades from A Nova Democracy: “Witzel: Terrorist and Murderer”.

Henceforth we mirror some of the actions, videos of demonstrations and pictures of manifestations that took place, not only in Rio, but that also were conducted in other Parts of Brazil to show the support and sympathy for the just struggles against the terror exerted by the military police under the command of governor Witzel.
